The author's deliberate selection of language and her thorough explanations for choosing particular terms reflect a high level of care and professionalism. She provides clear, concise definitions of terms used throughout the book. Whilst the book is factual and research-based, a thread of compassion is skilfully woven throughout. The layout of the book makes it very easy to read and refer back to. The author organises the material with well-defined section headings, utilises bullet points to concisely summarise references, incorporates 'easy read' summaries, and offers clear illustrative examples.

Providing practical guidance, including sample responses for caregivers to practice, can be highly beneficial for supervising social workers and foster carers. This allows them to foster non-shaming communication that addresses the unique needs of neurodivergent children and young people. The author also examines the benefits of a trauma-informed approach when working with these individuals, highlighting its potential to offer effective support.

Foster carers and supervising social workers will find the chapters on prevention and sexual health information helpful. In my experience, practitioners and caregivers are not always confident about this area of work with children and young people, and even less so with neurodivergent individuals. The information in this book can support rich discussions about household safer caring plans, as well as individual safety plans.

Finally, the exercises at the end of the book could be used in training, supervision and support groups.

I would highly recommend this book to all members of the neurodivergent child’s support network.
