From Insight to action: strengthening personal and professional judgement for organisational impact

NAFP are delighted to invite Dr. Arlene Weekes to host this seminar as she shares her research on the link between personal factors and professional effectiveness, highlighting how internal and external influences can shape our work in fostering services.

Arlene P Weekes, PhD, PGCHE, SFHEA, is a published author, her social work career began in 1990, she has worked in local government, the private sector and charitable sector. Arlene has 35 years’ experience, holding many roles, primarily as a manager - including Probation Officer, Leaving Care Team Manager, Children in Need and Looked After Children and Special Guardian Order and Connected Persons Service Manager, Child Protection Chair and Independent Reviewing Officer for both foster carers and children.

She currently divides her time as an Associate Professor, freelance trainer and Independent Fostering Panel Chair. Arlene's PhD research, awarded in 2021, explored how the biographies, attitudes and values of an individual influence their role and decision-making. One of the conclusions of this research was that, to execute roles effectively, individuals need to be more self-aware and manage conscious and unconscious influences. This Seminar will introduce the concept of Effective Personal and Professional Judgement (EPPJ), a framework with a strapline “Increased personal awareness increases professional effectiveness”.

In this interactive seminar, we will explore together:

• The EPPJ framework
• Ways to strengthen curiosity and critical thinking in fostering such as panel discussions.
• The power of personal judgement
• Understand how internal and external influences impact judgment
